Tile Installation Preparation

Our experts

Preparing Your Space

A successful tile installation starts long before the first tile is set. The surface underneath needs to be properly assessed and prepared to create a stable, suitable foundation for the finished tile.

At New Design Tile, we handle the preparation required for each project, from floor levelling and substrate preparation to waterproofing, uncoupling systems, and underfloor heating. We consider the space, existing conditions, and tile installation system to help ensure everything is properly prepared before the tile goes down.

Floor Leveling

Bathroom tile can be used on floors, walls, showers and feature areas, with different materials and layouts suited to each space. We install porcelain, ceramic, natural stone and other tile based on the project and selected finishes.

Substrate Preparation

The substrate is the surface that sits underneath your tile. Before installation, we make sure it is clean, stable, and suitable for tile. If the existing surface has damage, uneven areas, or other issues, these need to be addressed before the tile is installed.Waterproofing

Schluter Systems

Built-in niches, benches and shelves can add useful storage and function without taking up additional floor space. We plan and tile these features as part of the shower and overall bathroom installation.

Underfloor Heating

Tile and grout are not the waterproofing system behind a shower or wet area. We prepare the substrate, install appropriate waterproofing and membrane systems, and complete the surface preparation before tile installation.

Uncoupling Membranes

An uncoupling membrane is a layer installed between the floor and tile to help manage movement between the two surfaces. This can help protect the tile and grout from stresses that can occur as the underlying surface moves or changes over time.

Organized Work Area

A well-prepared workspace helps keep the installation organized from start to finish. We take care to protect surrounding areas, maintain a clean work environment, and leave the space ready for the next stage of the project.

Tile is only one part of the finished installation. The surface beneath it plays an important role in how the tile and grout perform over time, which is why proper preparation is an important step before installation begins.

Quality Starts Beneath The Tile

Preparing Wet Areas & Heated Floors

Bathrooms, showers, and heated floors require additional consideration before tile installation. Waterproofing helps protect wet areas from moisture, while heated floors require compatible materials and preparation to account for temperature changes within the installation.

We take these conditions into consideration when preparing each project, selecting the appropriate systems and materials for the space and the tile being installed.

The Details Matter

Proper preparation is not always visible once the tile is installed, but it can make a significant difference to the finished result. From protecting surrounding surfaces to ensuring the substrate is ready and the installation area is clean and organized, we take care with the details before the tile goes down.

Our goal is to create the right conditions for every stage of the installation, from preparation through to the finished tile.

Tile Preparation FAQs

What needs to be done before installing tile?

Before tile is installed, the surface should be assessed for stability, flatness, moisture, and suitability for the intended installation. Any necessary preparation, levelling, waterproofing, or supporting systems can then be completed.

Does a floor need to be perfectly level before installing tile?

Not every floor needs to be perfectly level, but it should be sufficiently flat and stable for the tile being installed. If the surface has excessive unevenness, levelling or other preparation may be required.

Can tile be installed over an uneven floor?

Tile can sometimes be installed over a surface that is not perfectly level, but significant unevenness can affect the finished installation. We assess the existing surface and determine what preparation is needed before installation.

Why is waterproofing important before tiling?

Waterproofing helps protect the underlying structure from moisture and is particularly important in showers, bathrooms, and other wet areas. The appropriate waterproofing system depends on the space and installation requirements.

What is a Schluter system?

Schluter provides a range of products and systems for tile installations, including waterproofing, uncoupling, shower systems, profiles, and heated floor solutions. We use appropriate Schluter products based on the needs of each project.

What is an uncoupling membrane?

An uncoupling membrane is installed between the substrate and tile to help manage movement between the two surfaces. Depending on the system, it can also provide waterproofing and other protective functions.

Can tile be installed over underfloor heating?

Yes. Tile is well suited to radiant floor heating, but the installation needs to account for temperature changes and movement within the tile assembly. Proper preparation and compatible installation materials are important.

What areas do you provide tile preparation services in?

Yes. Proper preparation is an important part of every tile installation we complete throughout Greater Vancouver, the Lower Mainland, and Fraser Valley. Depending on the project, this may include surface preparation, levelling, waterproofing, Schluter systems, underfloor heating, and other preparation requirements.
